Ice
Skating Etiquette
- In most rinks,
during public sessions when recreational skaters are on the ice,
the general flow of traffic is counter-clockwise on the perimeter
of the rink. Some rinks employ ice monitors who direct the flow
of traffic. The center portion of the ice customarily is reserved
for skaters practicing special skills.
- Read and
abide by all posted signs and warnings and cooperate with the
arena staff.
- Follow the
local rules, which sometimes include periods of skating clockwise.
Common sense should tell you not to skate against the flow of
traffic or practice stopping during a crowded session. Stops are
considered special skills and can be practiced in the center of
the rink.
- Do not stop
where you obstruct other skaters. Do not skate in groups.
- Accept responsibility
of knowing the range of your ability while on skates, skate within
the limits of that ability and as appropriate to the session on
which you are skating.
- Even beginning
skaters should be in enough control that they don't run into or
grab unto fellow skaters.
- Get up quickly
after a fall to prevent being an obstacle to the other skaters
and to avoid being run over.
- Leave the
ice surface when resurfacing maintenance is taking place.
- Keep exits
clear and do not sit on the dasher boards.
- Before getting
on the rink, look for oncoming skaters.
- Maintain
a proper lookout to avoid other skaters, objects, or conditions
on the ice surface .
- Report any
hazards to the ice monitor or arena staff.
- Refrain from
taking food or drink onto the rink surface or the surrounding
dasher or cap rail.
- Do not carry
children or items while skating.
- Refrain from
acting in a manner that may cause or contribute to injury of yourself
or any other person.
- If you are
capable, it is a nice gesture to assist someone who has fallen.
- Etiquette
is mainly common sense and courtesy.
